Day of the Seafarer 2025

News

This year’s Day of the Seafarer theme, my harassment-free ship, aims to promote a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea.

Findings from our 2024 Re:fresh study show that 16% of seafarers have experienced bullying or harassment in the past three years. The report also revealed the following regarding bullying and harassment:

– It is most often related to rank, ethnicity, appearance, age, or skin color.
– 60% said the aggressor was a superior.
– Younger seafarers are more affected.
– 16% of seafarers don’t know where to report bullying or discrimination.

As seafarers spend months on board ships, the impact of harassment and bullying is significant. By taking meaningful action, the maritime industry can better protect its crew and improve life on board. To address this, the International Chamber of Shipping has developed a set of industry principles aimed at establishing effective measures.
